Chapter Eight

Demetri dragged in a lungful of the fresh night air as he took the key from Rania. He hadn’t even kissed her yet and already he felt intoxicated. She was his wife—at last. The thought sent a quiver through him. It was as though he’d been waiting for her forever. Two weeks ago he didn’t even know she existed. Hopefully once they’d made love he could get back on an even keel and concentrate on business and building his empire. With a little added spice while Rania was around.

Why was she so nervous? She’d flirted with him and kissed him like an experienced lover. She couldn’t be…

“Rania, this isn’t your first time, is it?” Every muscle tensed. Although which answer he was hoping for he wasn’t sure. To be her first and know that no man had ever tasted her before was a heady thought. Yet to initiate her in the ways of love would require a lot of patience, a virtue he definitely lacked whenever he looked at her.

“First time getting married? Yup.”

“First time making love.”

“I think you mean marital-sanctified copulation.”

He smiled but didn’t laugh. “Rania, are you a virgin?”

“No. I’ve had sex before.” She shuffled a pebble off the path and into the flowerbed with her shoe.

“But not like this.” He raised her face to his as she tried to hide her expression in the dark.

“No. It seems different somehow. Less spontaneous. More permanent.”

He wished she hadn’t said that word. The entire day, through the whole elaborate Orthodox ceremony, he’d continually reminded himself this was only a temporary arrangement, a needed step to secure the property. He’d tried to focus on the land. Too bad all this attention was on the woman next to him. For tonight at least.

“Show me what you’ve done to this shack, aside from paint it pink.” He unlocked the door. Should I carry her across the threshold? Before he could decide, she barreled into the room.

He stepped in slowly behind her, amazed at the change to the place in the week he’d been gone. It was still tiny, but now cozy. A slate floor had been laid and a stack of huge, colorful cushions rested against a newly plastered but unpainted wall. The small kitchen had been completely remodeled with new and compact appliances. Well-worn wood counter tops and mismatched crockery made it look like it had been used for years.

In the sink sat a bottle of French champagne; a few ice cubes still floated in the water. Two gold-rimmed champagne flutes were next to it on the counter. A note was propped against the glasses. Singariteeria, Christina.

Rania flicked the card between her fingers. “Not every day the ex-girlfriend congratulates a former lover on his marriage.”

“Christina and I were never lovers.”

“Well, don’t expect me to send you champagne when you remarry.”

“No. I would never expect that of you.” He uncorked the sparkling wine and poured two glasses, handing one to his bride.

“What do you expect of me, Demetri?” She raised her head and speared him through the heart with her amber eyes.
